Prototyping Interactions

Thesis Abstract

Designers are comfortable working on future concepts and learning about prospects in a given design situation through interventions in the form of prototypes. This thesis examines the design process and prototyping techniques used during the design of new interaction design concepts for the future commercial flight deck, a research contract between the Interaction Design program at the Division of Design, School of Art at the University of Washington and the Flight Deck Concept Center at the Boeing Company, Commercial Airplanes Division.

Tracing “why” and “how” the UW design team used several types of prototyping techniques for concept exploration, the thesis captures the design collaboration between the design team at the University of Washington and researchers and engineers at Boeing during the concept design of a commercial flight deck, set 30-50 years into the future.
